Project management does not have a senior individual contributor track above Senior Project Manager in the traditional sense. The senior end of the market is almost entirely leadership-oriented. Specialists who prefer to remain as senior practitioners tend to move into agile coaching or consulting, particularly at the Big Four or specialist programme delivery firms.
Senior PM to Programme Manager to Delivery Director or PMO Director. The Programme Manager step is the major transition. Scope increases significantly and the role becomes primarily about managing interdependencies, stakeholder relationships, and organisational risk rather than individual project delivery.

Project Managers typically progress into Programme Manager or Delivery Manager roles. A smaller cohort moves into Product Owner positions in agile organisations.
PMP and PRINCE2 Practitioner are the two most widely recognised in the Irish market. PMP carries more weight at international and US-headquartered companies. PRINCE2 Practitioner is preferred at UK-headquartered firms and public sector organisations. Agile PM or SAFe certification is increasingly expected for technology project management roles.
Most project managers reach Senior between years 5 and 9. The step up requires demonstrating that you have managed a project with significant budget responsibility, cross-functional stakeholder complexity, and preferably an element of organisational change management. Budget ownership is the most common gap that delays promotion.
Project Managers own individual projects with defined scope, timeline, and budget. Programme Managers manage multiple interdependent projects and are accountable for the strategic outcomes that the combined programme is supposed to deliver. The Programme Manager role requires significantly more stakeholder management at senior levels and is less focused on day-to-day task management.
It is possible but requires deliberate investment. The two roles have overlapping skills in stakeholder management and delivery, but Product Management requires customer research, commercial judgment, and strategy ownership that Project Management does not typically develop. PMs who have worked closely with Product Managers on discovery work are the strongest transition candidates.
