Compare a contractor rate with a job offer in three steps

1. Find your role. Start with the country and role benchmark, not a generic headline rate.

2. Set realistic days. Model the working days you expect to invoice, including gaps and unpaid leave.

3. Compare take-home. Use the local calculator before choosing a contract structure or rejecting a permanent offer.

Frequently asked questions

1

What contractor day rates do you cover?

We publish verified contractor day rate benchmarks for technology roles across 26 global markets, including software engineering, data, infrastructure, DevOps, and product disciplines. Each benchmark shows a median day rate, typical range, and confidence rating.

2

How are contractor day rates different from salaries?

Day rates reflect what contractors charge per working day on a freelance or contract basis. They are typically higher than the daily equivalent of a permanent salary because contractors cover their own taxes, benefits, and business costs. Permanent salary benchmarks are published separately on the Salaries section.

3

Can I calculate my contractor take-home from a day rate?

Yes. Each role page includes a link to the day rate calculator pre-filled with that role's median rate. For Ireland this covers PAYE umbrella, sole trader, and director structures. For the UK it covers inside and outside IR35 scenarios. For every other live market it converts your day rate into the equivalent permanent salary and take-home pay under that market's own tax rules.

4

How often is the day rate data updated?

Day rate data is reviewed and refreshed on a rolling basis. The source year is shown on every benchmark so you always know how current the figures are.

5

How does IR35 affect my UK contractor day rate?

IR35 is the UK tax legislation that determines whether HMRC treats a contractor as a disguised employee. If you are assessed inside IR35, your income is taxed broadly like employment income. Outside IR35 you operate through a limited company and can draw dividends. Use our IR35 calculator to compare both scenarios at any day rate.

6

What day rate should I use when comparing a contract with a permanent job?

Use the role's typical range as a starting point, then model realistic billable days and your tax structure. A contractor's rate needs to cover unpaid leave, gaps between contracts, pension saving, insurance, equipment, and the benefits that a permanent employer may provide.
