The role is almost exclusively filled by internal promotion or lateral moves from Cloud Architecture or Solutions Architecture. Most Enterprise Architects in Ireland have 10 to 14 years of combined technical and stakeholder management experience. The key differentiator is the ability to connect technology decisions to business strategy in a language that board members understand.
For people who enjoy operating at the intersection of technology and business strategy, it is one of the most interesting senior roles in Irish tech. The pay ceiling is high, the work is strategic rather than operational, and the role carries genuine organisational influence. The tradeoff is that hands-on technical work is largely absent.
TOGAF is the most commonly cited framework qualification in Irish Enterprise Architect job postings, though it is rarely the deciding factor for experienced candidates. More important is a track record of delivering architecture governance programs and demonstrable experience presenting to C-suite and board stakeholders.
At this level, the distinction between technical leadership and management has effectively disappeared. Enterprise Architects who progress further do so into CTO, VP Technology, or Chief Digital Officer roles, which are executive positions with significant people and budget responsibility.
