AI Engineer Career Path in Ireland

Engineers with strong Python skills and some exposure to APIs can make a credible transition in 6 to 12 months. The practical path is building RAG pipelines and LLM-powered features in personal or open-source projects, then applying for roles that list AI integration as a growth area rather than a core requirement. LangChain and the Anthropic or OpenAI SDKs have a shallow enough learning curve that the barrier is mostly project experience, not foundational knowledge.

Less defined than traditional software engineering, but it is forming quickly. Senior AI Engineer is well-established. Staff and Principal titles exist at the larger tech companies in Dublin. At most organisations, the path above Senior currently depends on how central AI is to the product. The clearer the AI function, the more defined the ladder.

Senior AI Engineers earn around 15 to 20% more than Senior Software Engineers at equivalent companies. The gap is most pronounced at companies where AI is the primary product differentiator. At companies where AI is a supporting feature, the premium is smaller.

The two main paths are ML Engineering for those who want to go deeper into model infrastructure and training, and Solutions Architecture or Director of AI for those who want to move into platform design or leadership. A smaller group moves into product management roles focused on AI product strategy.
