How the ranking works:each market's gross AI/ML Engineer benchmark salary (reused from that market's own AI Engineer Salary guide, linked below) is run through that market's own live take-home tax engine to get a real net-pay figure in local currency. The local-currency figure is the number that matters for budgeting; USD is shown only as a common yardstick for ranking, converted at indicative FX rates as of 11 Aug 2026.
This is not a cost-of-living-adjusted “real value” ranking. A higher USD-equivalent net-pay figure in Hong Kong or Singapore does not mean more purchasing power once local housing costs are factored in. See the qualitative cost-of-living note under each market, sourced from Mercer's most recently published Cost of Living City Ranking.
Want the numbers for a specific salary, not the benchmark? Use each market's own take-home calculator, linked below the table, and enter your exact offer.
Each market's mid-level and senior AI/ML Engineer gross salary is reused directly from that market's own AI Engineer Salary guide on this site, so the numbers here stay consistent with everything else the site says about that market's AI pay.
The net-pay figure
That gross salary is run through the same tax engine that powers each market's own standalone take-home calculator, Income Tax and National Insurance for the UK, IRAS bands for Singapore, GOSI for Saudi Arabia, and so on. No flat cross-market estimate.
The ranking axis
Local-currency net pay is converted to USD at an indicative, dated FX rate purely so eleven currencies can sit on one ranked list. The local-currency figure, shown first on every row, is the one that matters for actually budgeting a move.

Frequently asked questions
1
Which country pays AI engineers the most in 2026?
On a USD-equivalent net-pay basis, United Arab Emirates currently ranks highest for senior AI/ML Engineers in this comparison, netting approximately $204K USD-equivalent a year after that market's own tax and social-security deductions. United Arab Emirates leads for mid-level AI/ML Engineers. This is a USD-equivalent ranking for comparison purposes only, it does not adjust for cost of living, and the local-currency figure (not the USD conversion) is the number that actually matters for your own budgeting.
2
Is a higher USD-equivalent salary actually worth more?
Not necessarily. Markets that rank highest on raw USD-equivalent net pay, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore, also carry some of the highest costs of living in the world (Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey ranks them #1 and #2 globally out of 226 cities). A lower-ranked market like New Zealand or Canada can leave you with more real purchasing power once housing is priced in, even at a lower headline number. This tool deliberately does not build a full cost-of-living index (that requires far more precision than a single site-wide multiplier can honestly provide) and instead shows a qualitative cost-of-living note per market, sourced from Mercer, next to each figure.
3
How are the net-pay figures calculated for each market?
Each market's benchmark gross salary (reused directly from that market's own AI Engineer Salary guide on this site) is run through that market's own live take-home tax engine, the same engine that powers each country's standalone take-home calculator. That means UK figures reflect actual Income Tax and National Insurance, Singapore figures reflect actual IRAS tax bands, UAE and Saudi Arabia figures reflect zero personal income tax, and so on. Nothing is estimated with a flat percentage across markets.
4
Why is the USD conversion only 'indicative'?
FX rates move daily and this tool is not a payments product, so the USD figures use a snapshot of mid-market exchange rates as of 11 Aug 2026 purely to let you rank markets on a common axis. Always treat the local-currency net-pay figure, shown first on every row, as the real number. If you need a live conversion for an actual relocation decision, check a live FX source on the day you need it.
5
Do these figures include equity, bonus, or relocation packages?
No. Every benchmark here is base salary only, matching how each market's own AI Engineer Salary guide reports its figures. Total compensation, including equity, sign-on bonuses, and relocation packages, varies enormously by employer and is out of scope for a like-for-like cross-market comparison. If a specific offer includes equity or bonus, add that separately after using this tool to establish the base-salary baseline.
6
Why do UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar rank differently once you look past the gross number?
All three have zero personal income tax on salaries for expatriates, so their retained percentage (net pay as a share of gross) is 100%, the highest of any market in this comparison. But their gross AI-engineer benchmarks are also structured differently (often quoted and negotiated monthly rather than as a single annual figure), and cost of living, particularly Dubai's, is high enough that the tax advantage doesn't automatically translate into the highest real disposable income. The methodology box above the table explains exactly what the ranking does and doesn't capture.
7
Can I use this to compare a specific offer, not just the benchmark salary?
This tool is built to compare markets at a consistent benchmark level, not a specific individual offer. To model your own exact number, use the linked take-home calculator for whichever market you're evaluating (UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, or the US), enter your actual gross salary, and compare that net figure against the benchmark row shown here for context.
Benchmark gross salaries are reused from each market's own AI Engineer Salary guide on this site (WebSearch-sourced estimates for the US and Qatar markets, which do not yet have a dedicated guide). Net-pay figures use each market's own 2026 tax rates via that market's take-home calculator engine. USD conversions use indicative FX rates as of 11 Aug 2026and are for ranking purposes only, not a transactional rate. Cost-of-living notes are sourced from Mercer's most recently published Cost of Living City Ranking. Results are estimates for planning purposes only and do not constitute financial, tax, immigration, or relocation advice.
