While both positions are vital to a modern tech organisation, Security Architect and Security Operations Manager have fundamentally different daily workflows.
Security Architect focuses primarily on designing and owning enterprise security architecture across cloud, network, application, and data layers, establishing zero-trust security patterns and DORA, GDPR, and NIS2-aligned security standards. Day-to-day work revolves around producing security architecture designs and patterns for new technology platforms, conducting threat modelling and security risk assessments, reviewing and approving security aspects of system designs, defining security standards and guidelines, working with cloud architects on secure AWS, Azure, and GCP design, engaging with penetration testing teams, advising on IAM architecture, and liaising with risk and compliance teams on DORA, GDPR, and NIS2 requirements.
Security Operations Manager focuses on leading and managing the Security Operations Centre function, owning the SOC operating model, SIEM tooling strategy, and team performance metrics to deliver 24/7 threat detection and incident response. Their time is spent leading and developing the SOC team of analysts and security engineers, managing major security incident response and post-incident reviews, overseeing SIEM platform performance and detection quality, producing SOC performance metrics and board reporting, engaging with threat intelligence providers, managing MSSP partner relationships, driving SOC automation and SOAR development, contributing to security strategy and cyber resilience planning, and reporting to the CISO on SOC effectiveness.
Essentially, Security Architect tends to designing and owning enterprise security architecture across cloud, while Security Operations Manager leading and managing the Security Operations Centre function.
