Calculations use 2026 IRS escalões (Orçamento do Estado 2026), the Categoria A dedução específica, and the 11% employee Segurança Social rate for mainland Portugal, single filer. Does not model married/joint filing, dependents, IRS Jovem, or the IFICI (NHR successor) regime. For precise figures, consult the Autoridade Tributária or a tax professional.

How this actually works

Your Portuguese payslip runs through two separate calculations. Social Security (Segurança Social) is a straightforward 11% of your full gross salary, with no cap at all, withheld directly every payslip. IRS is more involved: your gross income first gets a dedução específica subtracted (€4,587.09 for most salaried employees, or your actual Social Security contributions if that's higher), producing your rendimento coletável, which then runs through nine progressive escalões from 12.5% up to 48%.

The dedução específica crossover matters: below roughly €41,700 gross, everyone gets the same flat €4,587.09 deduction regardless of their actual Social Security paid. Above that threshold, since 11% of gross exceeds the flat amount, the deduction simply equals your real contribution, so the two figures track together from that point on.

What this calculator deliberately simplifies is the mínimo de existência, a statutory floor that fully or partially shields lower incomes from IRS. The full formula phases out gradually up to about €14,641 gross; this calculator applies the headline rule (full exemption at or below €12,880), which is accurate for every salary level this tool is aimed at.

Frequently asked questions

1

How do the nine IRS escalões actually work?

IRS is a standard progressive bracket system, nine escalões for 2026 ranging from 12.5% (up to €8,342 of rendimento coletável) to 48% (above €86,634). Each escalão taxes only the portion of income inside that band, just like most other progressive income tax systems — the published 'taxa média' column is simply the cumulative average rate at the top of each band, not a different calculation method.

2

What is the dedução específica, and how much is it?

It's a deduction applied before IRS brackets, reducing your rendimento bruto to your rendimento coletável. For Categoria A (salaried employment) in 2026, it's €4,587.09 (8.54 x the IAS of €537.13), or the total of your mandatory Social Security contributions if that's higher. Since Social Security is a flat 11% of gross with no cap, the crossover happens around €41,700 gross — below that, everyone gets the flat €4,587.09; above it, the deduction equals your actual 11% contribution.

3

Is Portuguese Social Security capped like some other countries' contributions?

No. The 11% employee Segurança Social contribution applies to your full gross salary with no ceiling at all — unlike, say, US Social Security or UK National Insurance's upper bands, a €200,000 salary in Portugal still pays 11% Social Security on every euro.

4

What is the mínimo de existência, and does it apply to me?

It's a statutory floor (article 70.º of the Código do IRS) ensuring nobody's after-tax income from employment or pensions falls below a basic subsistence level, €12,880 for 2026. The full legal formula phases the protection out gradually up to roughly €14,641 gross. This calculator applies the simplified headline rule (full IRS exemption at or below €12,880 gross), which won't affect the tech and professional salaries most people run through this tool, but see our dedicated IRS + Social Security mechanic insight for the complete phase-out math.

5

Does this calculator model the IFICI (NHR successor) regime?

No. IFICI (Incentivo Fiscal à Investigação Científica e Inovação), the 2024 successor to the old Residente Não Habitual (NHR) regime, offers a flat 20% IRS rate on eligible Categoria A/B income for qualifying highly-skilled newcomers who apply and are approved, a completely different calculation from the standard progressive escalões this calculator models. See our dedicated IFICI/NHR insight for eligibility and the math.

6

Is this calculator accurate for 2026?

It uses the 2026 IRS escalões (Orçamento do Estado 2026, Lei n.º 73-A/2025), the Categoria A dedução específica, and the 11% employee Segurança Social rate, for a single filer under mainland Portugal ('Continente') rates. Açores and Madeira apply regionally reduced IRS rates not modeled here, and married/joint filing, dependents, and IRS Jovem are also out of scope. Always verify with the Autoridade Tributária or a tax professional for precise figures.
