Pension Calculator Netherlands: AOW and Workplace Pension

This pension calculator for the Netherlands answers two questions: how much AOW you will get, and what your workplace pension really costs. A full Dutch state pension (AOW) is € 1.662,16 gross a month for someone living alone from July 2026. You build 2% of it for every year you live or work in the Netherlands, so an expat who arrives at 30 and stays to 67 gets about € 1.230. Your workplace pension comes on top: its premium is deducted before tax, so it costs you less than your payslip shows.

AOW calculator: how much state pension will I get?

The AOW counts the 50 years before your AOW age: from 17 to 67 today. Each year you live in the Netherlands, or work here and pay Dutch social insurance, adds 2%. Enter the ages you lived or worked here.

Each missing year costs 2%: about € 33 a month, for life. You are 13 years short of a full AOW.

SVB amounts from 1 July 2026, gross before wage tax. Only years in the 50 years before your AOW age count. Years abroad count only if you were insured in the Netherlands, for example while working for a Dutch employer. Check your own record in Mijn SVB.

What your workplace pension contribution really costs

Most Dutch employees build a second pension through their employer's pensioenfonds. You pay part of the premium, charged on your salary above the fund's franchise, and it comes off your gross pay before wage tax. That tax saving is why the real cost is well below the line on your payslip. The calculator starts with ABP's 2026 figures; change them to your own fund's rate and franchise from your payslip or UPO (annual pension statement).

How a Dutch pension fits together

PillarWho paysWhat decides the amount
1. AOW state pensionEveryone insured, through wage tax and premiumsYears insured in the 50 years before AOW age, and whether you live alone
2. Workplace pension (pensioenfonds or insurer)You and your employerYour salary above the franchise, the premium and your years in the scheme
3. Private saving (lijfrente, banksparen)You, with tax relief up to your jaarruimteWhat you save; mostly used by freelancers and people with pension gaps

For someone who spends a whole career here, the AOW and a workplace pension together are designed to replace a large part of average pay. For expats the AOW is the part that shrinks: every year you weren't here is 2% less for life. That makes the workplace pension, and any private saving, more important the later you arrive. Freelancers (ZZP) have no workplace pension at all, so their third-pillar saving does all the work; see the ZZP tax guide.

Leaving the Netherlands? What happens to your pension

  • AOW: the years you built up stay yours. SVB pays them from your AOW age, also when you live abroad. Years in another EU country usually count toward that country's state pension instead.
  • Workplace pension: it stays with your fund and is paid from the fund's retirement age. Keep your address up to date and check your UPO or mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl.
  • Keeping AOW going: moving outside the EU, you can often insure yourself voluntarily for AOW through SVB. You must apply before you leave or within a year, and you need at least a year of Dutch insurance just before leaving. It usually runs for up to 10 years (SVB conditions).

Netherlands pension: frequently asked questions

1

How much AOW will I get in 2026?

A full AOW from 1 July 2026 is € 1.662,16 gross a month if you live alone, or € 1.139,39 per person if you are married or living together, plus holiday allowance paid in May. You get the full amount only if you lived or worked in the Netherlands for all 50 years before your AOW age. Each missing year takes off 2%.

2

How much AOW will I get as an expat?

2% of the full AOW for every year you live or work in the Netherlands before AOW age. If you arrive at 30 and stay until 67, that is 37 years, so 74%: about € 1.230 gross a month if you live alone. If you stay eight years and then leave, you keep 16%, about € 266 a month, paid from your AOW age wherever you live in most countries.

3

Why is my AOW estimate lower than the full amount?

Usually for one of three reasons. You have years before you came to the Netherlands, or after you left, that don't count. You are married or living together, which pays a lower rate per person. Or you are comparing a gross figure with a net one: AOW is taxed, and holiday allowance is paid separately in May. Check the years SVB has on record in Mijn SVB.

4

Is my workplace pension contribution deducted before tax?

Yes. The employee premium comes off your gross pay before wage tax, so part of it comes back to you. At € 65.000 with ABP's 2026 figures, the premium is about € 3.724 a year but your take-home falls by only about € 1.844 (PayMetric Labs' own estimate).

5

What is the franchise in my Dutch pension?

The part of your salary you don't build pension on, because the AOW already covers it. Premium is charged only on salary above it. It is set by each fund: € 19.200 at ABP and €17,283 at PFZW in 2026. That's why someone on a modest salary pays a much lower share of their salary than the headline premium suggests.

6

What happens to my Dutch pension if I leave the Netherlands?

The AOW years you built up stay yours and are paid from your AOW age, also when you live abroad. Your workplace pension stays with the fund and is paid from its retirement age. If you move outside the EU, you can often keep building AOW with voluntary insurance through SVB, but you must apply before you leave or within a year, and you need to have been insured for at least a year just before leaving.

7

Is there a maximum salary for pension in 2026?

Yes. Pension can be built with tax relief only on salary up to € 137.800 in 2026. Above that, some employers offer a net pension plan (nettopensioen) or a higher gross salary instead.

8

What is the AOW age?

67 in 2026 and 2027, then 67 and 3 months in 2028 and 2029. From 2030 it follows life expectancy and is set five years ahead.

Methodology and sources

AOW amounts are SVB's from 1 July 2026 (SVB); the 2% a year over 50 years rule and AOW ages come from SVB and Rijksoverheid. ABP's 2026 premium of 27.1% and franchise come from ABP; PFZW's franchise and the € 137.800 maximum pensionable salary from PFZW. All checked on 29 September 2026.

The AOW figures are gross and use whole years. The contribution cost is PayMetric Labs' own estimate using our 2026 Dutch tax engine, and doesn't model the 30% ruling, disability premiums or how your fund defines pensionable salary. Your pension fund, SVB and mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl have your real figures. This is general information, not financial advice.
