How the 2027 minimum wage gets decided
CONASAMI, the national minimum wage commission, brings together government, employers and unions. Its council of representatives usually agrees the new rates in the first days of December, and they apply from 1 January. For 2026 it agreed on 3 December 2025, unanimously (STPS).
The government's goal is a minimum wage that buys 2.5 basic baskets (canastas básicas) by 2030, and CONASAMI's projections assume rises of around 12% a year to get there (Bloomberg Línea). The CTM union has proposed 5% to 10% for 2027. Business groups usually push for less, especially for small employers already absorbing the shorter working week.
Recent rises in the general zone, for context:
| Year | General zone | Border zone (ZLFN) |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | MX$278.80 | MX$419.88 |
| 2026 | MX$315.04 (+13%) | MX$440.87 (+5%) |
| 2027, 10% rise | MX$346.54 | MX$462.91 |
| 2027, 12% rise (conasami's projected path) | MX$352.84 | MX$462.91 |
| 2027, 13% rise (same as 2026) | MX$356.00 | MX$462.91 |

The 46-hour week: why your hourly pay rises more
A constitutional reform published in the Diario Oficial on 3 March 2026 cuts the maximum working week by two hours a year: 46 hours in 2027, 44 in 2028, 42 in 2029 and 40 in 2030 (La Jornada). It bans any cut in pay or benefits to pay for it.
The minimum wage is a daily rate, and a week's pay covers seven days including the paid rest day. In 2026 that is MX$2,205.28 for up to 48 hours, or MX$45.94 per hour worked. With a 12% rise and a 46-hour week, it would be MX$2,469.88 for up to 46 hours, MX$53.69 an hour, about 17% more. For employers, that is the real cost increase on minimum-wage staff who work full weeks, or the extra overtime if hours don't fall.
What you actually take home on the minimum wage
All of it. A worker who earns only the minimum wage has no ISR withheld (article 96 of the ISR law), and the employer pays the worker's IMSS contributions on top of its own (article 36 of the Social Security law). So MX$315.04 a day is MX$315.04 in your pocket.
That changes as soon as you earn more than the minimum: ISR applies to the whole salary, offset at lower pay by the employment subsidy, and you pay your own IMSS share. For a salary above the minimum, use the Mexico take-home calculator.
What moves with the minimum wage, and what doesn't
- Your aguinaldo: at least 15 days of your daily wage, so it rises with your pay. See the aguinaldo guide.
- Vacation pay and the prima vacacional, both calculated on your daily wage.
- Your finiquito and liquidación if you leave, including the prima de antigüedad, capped at twice the minimum wage a day. See finiquito vs liquidación.
- Professional minimum wages for specific trades, which CONASAMI raises at the same time.
- Not the UMA: fines, credits and tax limits such as the aguinaldo exemption use the UMA, updated each February with inflation.
Salario mínimo 2027: questions
What is the minimum wage in Mexico in 2026?
MX$315.04 a day in most of the country, about MX$9,582.47 a month, and MX$440.87 a day in the northern border free zone (ZLFN), about MX$13,409.80 a month. It rose 13% in the general zone and 5% at the border on 1 January 2026.
How much will the minimum wage be in 2027?
It isn't decided yet. CONASAMI normally agrees the rate in early December. Its projections assume rises of around 12% a year to 2030, which would take the general rate to about MX$352.84 a day. Union proposals have ranged from 5% to 10%. Our calculator shows the main scenarios.
Do minimum-wage workers pay ISR or IMSS?
No. Employers don't withhold ISR from someone who earns only the minimum wage (art. 96 of the ISR law), and the employer pays the worker's share of IMSS as well as its own (art. 36 of the Social Security law). Take-home pay is the full minimum wage. Earn even a little more, and both start to apply.
Why does my pay per hour go up more than the minimum wage?
Because the working week gets shorter. From 1 January 2027 the maximum week falls from 48 to 46 hours, and the reform bans any pay cut. The same weekly pay over fewer hours is a higher hourly rate: with a 12% rise, pay per hour worked would go up about 17%.
Is the minimum wage the same as the UMA?
No. Since 2016, fines, credits and many tax limits use the UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización), which INEGI updates each February with inflation. The minimum wage only sets pay. That's why the aguinaldo tax exemption (30 UMA) doesn't rise with the minimum wage.
What else changes when the minimum wage goes up?
Anything calculated from your daily wage: the minimum aguinaldo (15 days), vacation pay and prima vacacional, and your finiquito if you leave. The prima de antigüedad is capped at twice the minimum wage a day, so that cap rises too. Professional minimum wages (salarios mínimos profesionales) rise at the same time.
Which zone am I in?
The ZLFN covers municipalities along the US border, from Baja California to Tamaulipas. Everywhere else is the general zone. The rate depends on where you work, and your employer should apply it from the first day of January.
Methodology and limits
2025 and 2026 rates are from CONASAMI; monthly figures use 365 ÷ 12 days, as CONASAMI does. The 2027 working week is from the constitutional reform published in the DOF on 3 March 2026. The tax and social security treatment follows article 96 of the ISR law and article 36 of the Social Security law. Checked 7 October 2026.
2027 rates are PayMetric Labs' own scenarios until CONASAMI announces; we'll update this page that day. Pay per hour assumes a full maximum week. General information, not legal advice.
