ISR only — no IMSS. This calculator models federal ISR (Impuesto Sobre la Renta) withholding via the SAT tarifa mensual. It does not deduct IMSS (social security) employee contributions, which are real but genuinely more complex than a single rate — see the FAQ below for why they're out of scope.

Calculations use the 2026 SAT tarifa mensual (Anexo 8, RMF 2026) for ordinary salaried ISR withholding, applied to gross salary ÷ 12 and annualized. Does not model IMSS employee contributions, aguinaldo (year-end bonus), PTU (profit-sharing), or subsidio al empleo. For precise figures, consult the SAT or a tax professional.

How this actually works

Mexican federal ISR withholding on ordinary salary runs through the SAT's tarifa mensual, 11 progressive bands for 2026 from 1.92% up to 35%. SAT publishes each band as a cuota fija (a fixed amount) plus a marginal percentage applied to whatever your income exceeds that band's límite inferior, a shortcut that's mathematically identical to summing the tax owed across every lower band, which is exactly how this calculator computes and displays it.

Because the tarifa is defined monthly, this calculator takes your annual salary, divides by 12, runs it through the monthly bands, and multiplies the result back up to an annual figure, matching how ISR is actually withheld from a real payroll cheque rather than approximating it as a single annual bracket lookup.

What this calculator deliberately leaves out is IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social), the mandatory social-security contribution. Unlike ISR, IMSS isn't one flat rate, it's split across several sub-items with different bases and caps tied to the UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización), and approximating it risks a misleading number. This tool models ISR only and says so clearly rather than guessing at IMSS.

Frequently asked questions

1

How does the 11-band ISR tarifa actually work?

ISR (Impuesto Sobre la Renta) is a standard progressive system, 11 monthly bands for 2026 ranging from 1.92% (up to $844.59) to 35% (above $425,642). SAT publishes it as a cuota fija plus a marginal percentage on the excess over each band's límite inferior, but that's mathematically identical to summing the tax owed in each lower band, which is how this calculator computes it, band by band.

2

Why doesn't this calculator include IMSS?

Because IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) employee contributions aren't a single clean percentage the way ISR is. They're split across several sub-items (enfermedad y maternidad, invalidez y vida, cesantía en edad avanzada y vejez) with different bases and caps tied to UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización), genuinely more complex than a flat rate. Rather than approximate it and risk a misleading number, this calculator models ISR only and flags the exclusion clearly.

3

Does this calculator work on a monthly or annual basis?

Both — enter either, and the calculator converts internally. ISR withholding is fundamentally a monthly calculation (SAT's tarifa mensual), so this tool takes your annual salary, divides by 12, runs the monthly tarifa, and multiplies the result back up to an annual figure. That matches how ISR is actually withheld from an ordinary monthly payroll cheque.

4

Does this include aguinaldo (the year-end bonus) or PTU?

No. Aguinaldo (a mandatory minimum 15 days' salary, paid before 20 December, with its own tax exemption up to a UMA-linked threshold) and PTU (employee profit-sharing) are both taxed under separate rules from ordinary monthly salary. This calculator models only your regular monthly/annual base salary.

5

Is this calculator accurate for nearshore/remote tech salaries?

It's accurate for the ISR calculation on any Mexican-payroll salary regardless of industry, including nearshore tech roles paid through a Mexican entity or EOR. What it doesn't capture is compensation structured outside ordinary salary, stock options, USD-denominated contracts paid abroad, or freelance/RESICO arrangements, which follow different tax treatment entirely. See our dedicated RESICO vs sueldos y salarios insight for that comparison.

6

Is this calculator accurate for 2026?

It uses the 2026 SAT tarifa mensual (Anexo 8, Resolución Miscelánea Fiscal), the standard federal ISR schedule for salaried income. It doesn't model IMSS, aguinaldo, PTU, subsidio al empleo, or the RESICO regime for independent/small-business income. Always verify with the SAT or a tax professional for precise figures.
