Data Engineer Salary Ireland 2026: Dublin Pay, Skills and Take-Home

By PayMetric Labs Research Desk

Data Engineers in Ireland typically earn €65K-€85K at mid-level and €85K-€110K at senior level. Compare salary bands, Dublin opportunities, in-demand stack skills and take-home pay.

The short answer

Junior

€45K–€58K

0–2 years, permanent base

Mid-level

€65K–€85K

2–5 years, permanent base

Senior

€85K–€110K

5–8 years, permanent base

Data Engineers are paid for making data useful when it is messy, late, expensive or under scrutiny. The title covers a wide range, from someone maintaining SQL transformations to someone designing a streaming platform used by an entire product organisation. That is why a single “average salary” is less useful than a clear view of level and scope.

The bands below are an editorial benchmark for permanent Ireland roles in 2026. Use them to start a negotiation, not to declare an offer fair or unfair in isolation. The details that tend to shift pay are production ownership, cloud depth, data scale and whether you are building a platform rather than a single pipeline.

Data Engineer salary bands by experience

LevelTypical scopeBase range
Junior, 0–2 yearsSQL, pipeline support, testing and documentation€45K–€58K
Mid-level, 2–5 yearsOwns pipelines and data models end to end€65K–€85K
Senior, 5–8 yearsPlatform design, reliability, cost and technical leadership€85K–€110K
Lead or Staff, 8+ yearsOrganisation-wide architecture and team leverage€110K–€145K+

What moves an offer up the range

Employers pay more when the work is difficult to replace. Strong SQL is expected. The premium starts when you can design a resilient warehouse or lakehouse, make dbt and orchestration reliable, optimise cloud cost, handle data quality, and explain the trade-offs to product and analytics colleagues.

Databricks, Snowflake, PySpark, Kafka, AWS Glue or Redshift are useful signals, but a tool name by itself does not create a premium. Show what you owned: latency, spend, reliability, governance, migration risk or a business outcome that depended on the system.

Dublin, industry and total compensation

Dublin has the widest set of multinational, financial-services and platform-heavy opportunities. It also has the highest rent and often a more explicit expectation of office time. For a fair comparison, separate base salary, bonus, employer pension, equity and travel cost. A €5,000 base difference can disappear quickly if one offer includes a better pension or requires three expensive commute days each week.

What a €70,000 salary looks like after tax

For a single PAYE employee with standard tax credits, our 2026 calculator estimates €70,000 gross at approximately 50,227 net a year, or 4,186 a month. That estimate excludes pension contributions, equity, rental credits and personal circumstances that can change the result.

The question to take into a negotiation is not only “is €70K good?” It is “what does this leave after tax, pension, rent and the days I need to be in Dublin?”

Contract rates: compare the whole package

Senior contract roles can advertise a higher day rate, often roughly €450–€750 depending on specialism and project risk. That is revenue, not salary. It must cover unpaid leave, gaps between contracts, pension, insurance and administration. Compare a realistic annual net outcome before moving from a permanent offer to a contract.

Data Engineer versus Data Scientist and Analytics Engineer

Data Engineers make data available, dependable and affordable to use. Data Scientists use data to answer questions or build models. Analytics Engineers sit closer to reporting and metrics, transforming data into trusted analytical models. In small companies one person may do all three, but larger employers reward deep ownership differently. If a role blends them, ask which responsibility is the priority before comparing it with a conventional Data Engineer benchmark.

A negotiation checklist that goes beyond base salary

  • Ask whether the number is base pay, total cash, or total compensation including equity.
  • Clarify pension contribution, bonus target, on-call compensation and learning budget.
  • Ask which part of the platform you will own and how success will be measured after six months.
  • Check required office days and price the commute before accepting a Dublin premium.
  • For a relocation offer, confirm the permit route before treating the role as secured.

The skills that make senior pay credible

At senior level, interviewers are looking for more than a list of tools. They want evidence that you can make a data platform safer, faster or cheaper while keeping analysts and product teams productive. A migration from legacy ETL, an incident you prevented, a cost reduction, a reliable event stream or a well-governed self-service model tells a stronger story than “worked with Snowflake”. That evidence is what supports the upper end of a pay band.

Price the offer you actually received

Run the base salary through the calculator, then compare total compensation and commuting expectations. If equity is part of the offer, assess it separately from cash.

Frequently asked questions

1

What is a Data Engineer salary in Ireland in 2026?

A practical 2026 benchmark is €45K-€58K for junior roles, €65K-€85K at mid-level, €85K-€110K for senior roles and €110K+ for staff or lead scope. Employer, city, platform depth and total compensation can move the number substantially.

2

Does Dublin pay more for Data Engineers?

Dublin has the deepest concentration of platform, financial-services and multinational roles, and can pay a premium. It is more useful to compare job scope, equity, pension and commute requirements than to assume every Dublin role pays more.

3

Which skills raise Data Engineer pay?

Skills attached to production responsibility tend to matter most: warehouse or lakehouse design, Databricks or Snowflake, dbt, orchestration, streaming, cloud data services and dependable data-quality practices.

4

Is Data Engineering eligible for a Critical Skills Employment Permit?

It may be, where the actual job maps to the current official Critical Skills list and all other conditions are met. Confirm the occupation and specialism against the Department's current list rather than relying on a title alone.
