“Critical Skills visa” searches often jump straight to salary. That is understandable, but it is backwards. A high salary does not turn an ineligible occupation into an eligible Critical Skills Employment Permit role. Start with the work you will actually do, then check remuneration and the rest of the permit criteria.
This page is intentionally an occupation guide. It does not repeat our salary-threshold guide or try to answer every €55,000 offer scenario. Its job is to help you, a recruiter or a hiring manager decide whether a role is worth progressing to a formal permit assessment.
How to use the official list without misreading it
The Department's list is organised using SOC 2010 occupational classifications. Some broad categories are eligible only for named specialisms. That means “I work in IT” or “my contract says analyst” is not enough on its own.
Read the job description line by line. Identify the core work, technical specialism, qualification requirement and proposed remuneration. Then compare that evidence with the current official list. The Department says the current list has applied since 13 May 2026 under SI 213 of 2026.
Where tech roles most often fit
Software and systems
Software development, systems architecture and certain specialist ICT roles. Match the actual engineering work, not a generic “consultant” title.
Data and analytics
Data engineering, data science and specialist analytics work can sound alike but may map differently. Document the platform, modelling or engineering responsibilities.
Cybersecurity and infrastructure
Security, network and cloud work should be checked against the specific skills language in the official entry.
Semiconductors and engineering
Ireland's list also includes named engineering and science pathways. Hardware and process roles should not be forced into a software category.
These are navigation categories, not a substitute for the official directory. Job-title matching alone is risky.
The three checks after the role looks eligible
- Remuneration: use the current Department threshold for the relevant route and your qualification situation.
- Job offer: confirm the employer and contract meet the permit route's requirements.
- Evidence: make sure the title, responsibilities, degree and employment history tell the same story.
A better way to ask your recruiter
Instead of asking “Is this Critical Skills eligible?”, ask: “Which official occupation and specialism is the employer using for this role, and does my offer meet the applicable 2026 remuneration requirement?” It prompts a specific answer that can be checked before you commit to a move.
Why a job title can create a false positive
A “Data Engineer” could build governed pipelines and platforms, manage BI reporting, or work mainly in client services. A “Software Engineer” might be a specialist developer or a general IT support role. The title helps a recruiter find candidates, but it does not determine the permit route. The official list's detailed occupation language and documented responsibilities carry more weight.
What to have ready for a serious permit conversation
- A complete job description, including the specific technical or professional specialism.
- Your degree, professional qualification and relevant experience evidence.
- The employment contract, hours and proposed remuneration breakdown.
- Confirmation of the exact permit route and official occupation being relied on.

Does a role on the list guarantee a permit?
