What Is Critical Skills Employment Permit?
By PayMetric Labs Research Desk
Short answer
The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) is Ireland's main work permit route for non-EEA tech professionals, requiring a minimum gross base salary of €40,904 (with a relevant degree) or €68,911 (without one) in 2026.
CSEP is DETE's (Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment) flagship permit for roles on the Critical Skills Occupations List, which covers most software engineering, data, and cloud roles. Unlike the General Employment Permit, it doesn't require a labour market needs test, and it gives spouses and dependants the right to work in Ireland without needing their own permit.
The salary threshold is evaluated on gross base salary only, bonuses, RSUs, sign-on payments, and other variable compensation don't count, which catches out a lot of tech applicants whose total compensation looks well above the threshold but whose base salary alone falls short.
Meeting the threshold is a floor, not a target: €40,904 sits well below the market rate for most qualifying tech roles in Ireland, so it exists as a minimum safeguard rather than a benchmark for a fair offer.
