Your tax treatment depends on your operating structure. Agencia/nómina (agency): an agency or umbrella runs your pay exactly like a permanent employee, applying standard IRPF income tax plus employee Social Security after its fee comes off the top. Autónomo (freelance): a genuinely different mechanic, you pay a flat monthly cuota de autónomo tied to a net-income bracket (not a percentage of income), plus IRPF income tax on net profit after that cuota. Retention rates vary by structure and day rate. At lower to mid day rates, autónomos often retain more since the cuota de autónomo is a flat monthly fee rather than a percentage of income, so its bite shrinks as a proportion of revenue as rates rise. Agencia/nómina contractors pay percentage-based Social Security instead, which scales with income and includes unemployment cover an autónomo does not automatically get.

Autónomo generally nets more at typical IT contractor day rates thanks to the flat monthly cuota de autónomo, but this calculator does not model the tarifa plana discount available to new freelancers in their first 12 months, nor the Beckham Law regime available to some incoming workers (see the dedicated ES take-home calculator for that). Agencia/nómina is simpler and includes employee-style Social Security cover, at the cost of a lower net rate at most day rates.

At €685/day over 220 billable days, the gross annual contract income is €151K. This is a 135% gross premium over the MLOps Engineer permanent salary median of €64K/year.
