Java Developer Market Demand in Canada

Demand is stable and durable rather than growing fast. The Irish financial services sector, which is one of the largest employers of developers in the country, runs predominantly on Java. This creates a reliable base of demand that is not sensitive to the same cycles as consumer tech hiring. Java developers with Spring Boot and microservices experience are consistently in demand at these employers.

Fidelity Investments, State Street, and Citi are among the largest Java employers in Dublin, all running significant Java engineering operations. Bank of Ireland and AIB hire Java engineers for their technology transformation programmes. Accenture and IBM hire Java engineers for client delivery. Workday's Dublin office also has Java engineering teams.

Java developers have a lower remote rate, around 68%, versus around 80% for Python developers. The difference comes from sector mix. Financial services companies, which are the primary Java employers in Ireland, have stronger preferences for in-office or hybrid working than tech companies. Pure tech companies that use Java tend to have similar remote rates to other developer roles.

The UK has a substantially larger volume of Java roles because of the size of its financial services sector, particularly in London. UK salaries are broadly comparable when adjusted for cost of living. Ireland offers a concentration of roles in Dublin that is disproportionate to the country's size, and the competition for senior Java roles tends to be less intense than in London, which can make it easier to negotiate senior titles and compensation.
