TFSA Limit 2027: $7,500 Expected, $116,500 Total Room

By PayMetric Labs Research Desk

The TFSA limit for 2027 is set to rise to $7,500, the first increase since 2024, taking total room since 2009 to $116,500. The CRA confirms it in November, but the inflation data needed to set it is almost all published, and it clears the rounding threshold comfortably (PayMetric Labs' own calculation).

Why the TFSA limit rises to $7,500 in 2027

The TFSA limit isn't set by a yearly decision. The law fixes a base of $5,000 for 2009, raises it each year by the same indexation factor the CRA uses for tax brackets, and rounds the result to the nearest $500. That rounding is why the limit sat at $7,000 for three years: the indexed amount for 2026 was about $7,184.92, short of the $7,250 needed to round up.

The 2027 factor compares average consumer prices from October 2025 to September 2026 with the 12 months before (Statistics Canada CPI). With data through August 2026, it comes to about 2.6%. Only 0.9% was needed. Applied to the 2026 amount, that gives about $7,371.72, which rounds to $7,500.

Our chain of the CRA's published factors, from $5,000 in 2009, reproduces every TFSA limit the CRA has set (2015's $10,000 was a one-off legislated figure), so the method is sound. The factor itself also moves the federal tax brackets and credits for 2027; the CRA publishes it with the new limit in November (CRA indexation).

Your 2027 TFSA room by the year you turned 18

Room builds up from the year you turn 18 and are resident in Canada, whether or not you open an account or file a return (CRA). If you have never contributed, this is your room on January 1, 2027:

How your 2027 TFSA room is calculated

The CRA's formula is: the 2027 limit + unused room carried forward + everything you withdrew in 2026, less what you contribute in 2027 (CRA).

Say you end 2026 with $20,000 of unused room and you withdrew $10,000 during 2026 for a car. On January 1, 2027 your room is $7,500 + $20,000 + $10,000 = $37,500. The $10,000 only comes back in January: putting it back in December 2026 would have used up 2026 room instead.

Over-contributing is expensive. The CRA charges 1% a month on the highest excess in each month, so $2,000 too much for 3 months costs $60. A common trap is topping up in January using the room shown in your CRA account, before the CRA has processed the previous year's records.

Before you contribute in January 2027

  • Add up your own room from your statements: the CRA's figure won't include 2026 activity until the spring.
  • Count 2026 withdrawals as room for 2027, but not before January 1.
  • With accounts at more than one bank or broker, add them together; the limit is per person, not per account.
  • Automatic monthly transfers continue into the new year. Check they fit your 2027 room.
  • Deciding between TFSA and RRSP? Your RRSP room is on your notice of assessment, capped at $35,390 for 2027.

TFSA limit 2027: questions

1

What is the TFSA limit for 2027?

The CRA hasn't announced it yet, but it is almost certainly $7,500, up from $7,000. The limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, and inflation over the last year has been well above the 0.9% needed to round up (PayMetric Labs' own calculation from Statistics Canada CPI). The CRA usually confirms it in November.

2

How much TFSA room will I have in 2027?

If you were 18 or older and resident in Canada in 2009 and have never contributed, $116,500. Otherwise add up the annual limits from the year you turned 18 (or became resident), take off what you have contributed, and add back any withdrawals made before 2027. The table on this page gives the total by the year you turned 18.

3

Could the 2027 TFSA limit stay at $7,000?

Only if prices had fallen sharply. The 2027 indexation factor compares average CPI from October 2025 to September 2026 with the year before. With 11 of the 12 months published, it is about 2.6%, against the 0.9% needed for $7,500. September's CPI would have to collapse to an impossible level to change the result.

4

Why does my CRA account show less TFSA room than this?

The CRA updates TFSA room once a year, in the spring, from the records your bank or broker sends for the previous year. Contributions and withdrawals made this year are not in it yet, and January's new room appears only after the update. Keep your own running total and check it against your account statements, as the CRA itself recommends.

5

When can I put back money I withdrew from my TFSA?

On January 1 of the following year. A withdrawal adds the same amount to your room the next calendar year, not straight away. Putting it back in the same year, without other unused room, is an over-contribution, even though you only replaced what you took out.

6

What happens if I over-contribute in January?

The CRA charges 1% a month on the highest excess amount in each month it stays in the account. An excess of $2,000 left for 3 months costs $60. Withdraw the excess as soon as you notice: the tax stops from the month after it is gone.

7

I moved to Canada in 2027. Do I get the full $7,500?

You start accumulating room the day you become resident, if you are 18 or older and have a social insurance number. The CRA's own example gives a newcomer the full dollar limit for the year they arrived, and you get nothing for the years before. While you are non-resident you don't earn new room, and contributing as a non-resident is taxed.

8

TFSA or RRSP in 2027?

The RRSP limit for 2027 is already set at $35,390 (18% of last year's earned income, up to that cap). An RRSP saves tax at your marginal rate now and is taxed on the way out; a TFSA gives no deduction but nothing is taxed later. If you expect a lower tax rate in retirement than today, the RRSP usually wins; if not, or if you may need the money sooner, the TFSA.

Methodology and limits

TFSA limits for 2009 to 2026 and the 2027 RRSP limit come from the CRA limits table; contribution room rules from the CRA's room calculation and eligibility pages. The 2027 TFSA limit is PayMetric Labs' own calculation: the CRA's published indexation factors chained from 2009, and a 2027 factor from Statistics Canada CPI (table 18-10-0004-01) through August 2026, with August repeated for September until it is published. The CRA confirms the limit in November. Checked October 13, 2026.

The room examples assume one person with no excess contributions. This is general information, not tax or investment advice.
