It depends on how the contract is quoted. A rate quoted "plus super" means the client pays the 12% Super Guarantee on top of your day rate. A rate quoted "inclusive of super" means the 12% comes out of the rate you're quoted. Always confirm which basis a contract is quoted on before comparing it to a permanent salary, since the difference is worth several thousand dollars a year at most day rates.

If your annual turnover as a sole trader or through your own company is $75,000 or more, GST registration is mandatory and you add 10% to your invoiced rate (the GST itself isn't your income, you remit it to the ATO).
