US AI Engineer Salary vs 10 Other Global Markets (2026)

By PayMetric Labs Research Desk · benchmark salary: WebSearch estimate (no dedicated US guide yet) · net pay: live 2026 federal tax calculation · USD ranking: indicative FX snapshot

A senior AI/ML Engineer on the US's $210,000 benchmark nets roughly $156,292 federal-only, before any state tax. See how that federal baseline compares, market by market, to the UK, Singapore, Dubai, and 7 other live markets once each one's own tax system runs the same benchmark salary.

A note on where these numbers come from: unlike 9 of the other 10 markets in this comparison, the US doesn't yet have a dedicated AI Engineer Salary guide on this site, so the gross benchmark used below is a WebSearch estimate (base pay only, excluding equity and bonus), not figures pulled from live job-listing data the way the other markets' benchmarks are. Net-pay figures are computed live through the US federal tax and FICA rules (no state tax modelled). USD conversions use an indicative FX snapshot as of 11 Aug 2026, for ranking only, not a transactional rate.

The US pays the highest AI salaries on paper. Does it also net the most?

US AI engineer job postings routinely show the highest headline base pay of any major market, and total compensation figures including equity push that further still. But "highest gross" and "highest net take-home" aren't the same question, and every one of the US's competitor markets in this comparison taxes very differently: some have zero personal income tax, some have social-contribution structures the US doesn't, and every US state adds its own layer that this federal-only baseline deliberately excludes.

This article runs the US's federal-only senior AI/ML Engineer benchmark, and the equivalent benchmark from each of 10 other live markets, through each market's own live take-home tax engine, the same engine that powers this site's standalone take-home calculators. No flat percentage estimates.

How the ranking is actually calculated

1. The benchmark. Nine of the eleven markets reuse the gross AI/ML Engineer salary from that market's own AI Engineer Salary guide on this site. The US and Qatar don't yet have a dedicated guide, so those two benchmarks are WebSearch-sourced estimates, flagged as such throughout this article.

2. The tax engine. Each gross figure is run through the same tax engine behind that market's own standalone take-home calculator: real federal tax brackets and FICA for the US (no state), real Income Tax and NI bands for the UK, real IRAS bands for Singapore, zero-tax rules where they genuinely apply. Nothing is a flat cross-market percentage.

3. The ranking axis. Local-currency net pay converts to USD at an indicative FX snapshot purely so 11 currencies can share one ranked list; for the US this is already USD. Local currency is always the real number, the FX step only matters for the other 10 markets.

Federal-only is a floor, not the whole US picture

The $156,292 figure used in this comparison is the most favorable realistic US outcome: federal tax and FICA only, no state tax at all. That's accurate for engineers based in Texas, Florida, Washington, or another no-income-tax state, but a large share of US AI hiring concentrates in California and New York, where state tax and, in California's case, SDI would cut meaningfully further into that number. The gap to the UAE (which levies zero tax at any level of government) would widen further for a California- or New York-based engineer.

The other side of that trade-off: this comparison is base salary only. US tech AI roles, especially at large public companies and well-funded startups, frequently carry equity and bonus on top of base that meaningfully changes total compensation, in a way none of the other 10 markets in this comparison typically match at the same scale.

What about mid-level US AI engineers?

On the mid-level national benchmark ($150,000 gross), a US AI/ML Engineer nets $113,791 a year federal-only, ranking 2 of 11 markets on this comparison, ahead of 9 others. Run your own exact salary and state, at either level, through the US take-home calculator and compare it against the AI Talent Location Planner.

Frequently asked questions

1

How does the US AI engineer salary compare to other global markets in 2026?

Run through each market's own tax system, a senior AI/ML Engineer's federal-only net pay ranks the US 2th out of the 11 markets in this comparison, behind only the UAE (zero personal income tax). The US benchmark nets $156,292 a year federal tax and FICA only, before any state tax, well ahead of Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, and the rest of the comparison.

2

Does this US figure include state tax?

No. This comparison deliberately uses the federal-only baseline (no state modelled), matching how a no-state-tax state like Texas, Florida, or Washington would actually apply. Moving the identical $210,000 senior benchmark to a high-tax state changes the outcome meaningfully: California and New York state tax would each cut several thousand dollars a year further into the $156,292 federal-only figure shown here. See our guide to no-state-tax states vs California and New York for the state-by-state breakdown.

3

Why isn't there a dedicated US AI Engineer Salary guide feeding this comparison yet?

This site's other 9 comparison markets each have a dedicated ai-engineer-salary-{country}-2026 guide with its own sourced benchmark; the US benchmark used here (and Qatar's) is a WebSearch-sourced estimate pending a dedicated US guide in a future content pass. The $150,000 mid-level and $210,000 senior base-pay figures used here are drawn from multiple 2026 market sources (ZipRecruiter, Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, and specialist AI-hiring salary guides) and represent base compensation only, not total comp including equity and bonus.

4

Is total compensation, including equity, higher than the base-only figure used here?

Often, substantially. Industry data for 2026 puts senior US AI engineer total compensation (base plus equity and bonus) meaningfully above base pay alone at many tech employers, particularly at large public companies and well-funded AI startups. This comparison intentionally uses base salary only, to stay consistent with how every other market's benchmark is reported on this site, since equity structures vary too much by employer to compare like-for-like across 11 countries.

5

Why does the UAE outrank the US despite the US having a much higher gross salary?

The UAE's zero personal income tax means its benchmark salary is retained at 100%, while the US federal-only benchmark is retained at roughly 74%. Even with a considerably lower gross figure than the US, the UAE's zero-tax structure is enough to edge ahead in net terms on this specific comparison. Once you factor in that most US tech AI roles also carry meaningfully higher total comp through equity, which this benchmark excludes, the real-world gap likely runs the other way for many US-based senior AI engineers.

6

What would a US AI engineer need to relocate to the UAE, Hong Kong, or Singapore?

Each requires an employer-sponsored work permit or pass tied to a specific job offer: the UAE's standard employment visa, Hong Kong's Top Talent Pass Scheme or general employment visa, and Singapore's Employment Pass gated by a minimum qualifying salary. None of these are instant processes, and none guarantee an offer at the benchmark salary used in this comparison, individual offers vary by employer, seniority, and specialism.

7

Does this comparison account for contractor or 1099 AI work?

No, this comparison is W-2 permanent-employee benchmark salaries only, run through each market's employee tax system. Contractor and 1099 structures work very differently, both within the US and market to market abroad, and are out of scope for a like-for-like comparison. See our 1099 vs W-2 guide for how that gap plays out specifically within the US.

Benchmark gross salaries are PayMetric Labs' own modeled benchmarks, kept consistent with each market's own AI Engineer Salary guide on this site (US and Qatar figures are WebSearch estimates pending a dedicated guide for those two markets; US figures are base pay only, excluding equity and bonus). Net-pay figures use each market's own 2026 tax rates; the US figure is federal tax and FICA only, no state tax modelled. USD conversions use indicative FX rates as of 11 Aug 2026 for ranking only, not a transactional rate.
