Software Engineer vs DevOps Engineer: Salary & Career Benchmarks in the US

In the US, Software Engineer roles typically command a higher median salary than DevOps Engineer positions. According to our 2026 live benchmark data, a mid-level Software Engineer earns a median salary of $182K, whereas a DevOps Engineer brings in roughly $167K (a gap of $15K at the median).

Seniority, tech stack, and location all move this gap. Senior practitioners in either discipline can exceed the upper range through specialist skills. See the skills premium section below for the specific certifications and tools that push offers to the top of the range.

While both positions are vital to a modern tech organisation, Software Engineer and DevOps Engineer have fundamentally different daily workflows.

Software Engineer focuses primarily on . Day-to-day work revolves around .

DevOps Engineer focuses on building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and deployment workflows. Their time is spent writing Terraform or Ansible scripts, managing Kubernetes clusters, configuring GitHub Actions or Jenkins pipelines, monitoring system health, and handling on-call incidents.

Transitioning between these two paths is achievable but requires targeted upskilling.

Moving from Software Engineer to DevOps Engineer: Linux administration, scripting (Bash or Python), and cloud fundamentals are the standard entry requirements. Software engineers transitioning in find the infrastructure mindset shift more important than any specific tooling gap.

Moving from DevOps Engineer to Software Engineer: Computer science degree or equivalent self-taught programming skills are the baseline. The Irish and UK market is largely language-agnostic at the point of entry, though Python, TypeScript, and Java dominate hiring volumes.

Neither path requires starting from scratch. Professionals in both roles share underlying technology fluency; the gap is usually domain knowledge and specific tooling rather than core engineering fundamentals.

In the US in 2026, both roles are seeing demand, but with different drivers.

Software Engineer demand is extreme, particularly in . DevOps Engineer demand is extreme, concentrated in cloud and platform engineering teams across Austin, New York, and Seattle, led by employers such as VMware and Snowflake.

Workspace flexibility significantly impacts total compensation value in the US.

Software Engineer roles score 78% on our remote-friendliness index (High). This is because . Where in-office attendance is required, it is typically driven by .

DevOps Engineer roles score 85% (Very High). Much of the work is asynchronous and tool-driven, though many US employers, particularly larger firms with formal return-to-office mandates, still expect two to three days a week in a Austin or New York office is the primary driver of flexibility. When office days are required, it is usually for cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder alignment sessions, which US employers headquartered in Austin and New York increasingly formalize into a fixed hybrid schedule rather than leaving to team discretion.
