If you enjoy writing code more than you enjoy thinking about how software breaks, yes. The SDET route is a gradual transition that lets you build software engineering skills while staying in the quality domain. A full switch into software engineering is also achievable and the QA background, particularly the ability to think about edge cases and system behaviour, makes you a stronger engineer than many who come from a pure development background.

At the same level, Software Engineers earn roughly €10 to €15k more than QA Engineers in Ireland. The gap is smaller for automation-heavy QA roles and SDET positions than for manual or mixed QA roles.
