Two paths forward

Stay technical

Cloud Architects who stay on the technical track move toward Enterprise Architecture or Distinguished Architect roles, which focus on organisation-wide platform strategy, security governance, and technical standards. The ceiling is high but the pool is small. Most practitioners who reach Distinguished Architect level are recognised as industry authorities in their cloud provider ecosystem, often with published reference architectures or conference keynote experience.

Move into management

Cloud Architect to Head of Cloud Architecture to VP Engineering (Infrastructure) or CTO. The management path requires developing strong business and financial communication skills early. Cloud architecture is deeply tied to capital expenditure decisions, and architects who can speak that language in front of C-suite stakeholders progress faster than those who communicate only in technical terms.

Career path questions for Cloud Architects in United Kingdom

1

How do you become a Cloud Architect in Ireland?

The typical path is Senior Cloud Engineer to Cloud Architect, usually after 6 to 10 years of experience. The step requires demonstrating that you can design platforms, not just implement services. Engineers who have owned architecture decision records, designed multi-account landing zones, and presented security controls to a technical steering committee are the strongest candidates.

2

What certifications help a Cloud Architect progress in Ireland?

AWS Solutions Architect Professional is the most impactful single credential in the Irish market. Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert is the equivalent for Azure-heavy organisations. Multi-cloud certification, particularly AWS and GCP combined, commands the largest market premium at the senior level.

3

Do Cloud Architects need to go into management to progress in Ireland?

No. The Principal and Distinguished Architect tracks are genuine technical leadership paths at larger organisations. Accenture, IBM, and the hyperscalers all have individual contributor architecture tracks that extend well beyond the standard Cloud Architect title. The tradeoff is that these roles are less common and require a longer track record.

4

What is the pay difference between a Cloud Architect and an Enterprise Architect in Ireland?

Enterprise Architects earn €140 to €220k in Ireland, compared to €108 to €172k for Cloud Architects. The gap reflects the broader scope and governance remit of the Enterprise Architect role, which involves C-suite engagement and organisation-wide technology strategy rather than platform design.
