The typical path is Senior Cloud Engineer to Cloud Architect, usually after 6 to 10 years of experience. The step requires demonstrating that you can design platforms, not just implement services. Engineers who have owned architecture decision records, designed multi-account landing zones, and presented security controls to a technical steering committee are the strongest candidates.
AWS Solutions Architect Professional is the most impactful single credential in the Irish market. Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert is the equivalent for Azure-heavy organisations.
