A note on where these numbers come from: the gross AI/ML Engineer benchmark for Singapore is PayMetric Labs' own modeled estimate, the same figure used in our AI Engineer Salary Singapore 2026 guide (not a government or national wage survey). Net-pay figures are computed live through Singapore's real 2026 tax rules. USD conversions use an indicative FX snapshot as of 11 Aug 2026, for ranking only, not a transactional rate.

Singapore is a genuine AI hub, but how does the net pay actually stack up?
Singapore's National AI Strategy 2.0 and its S$1 billion AI talent commitment through 2030 have made it one of the region's most active AI hiring markets. But "highly competitive salaries" only means something once it's compared against what the same AI/ML Engineer role would net after tax in the UK, the US, Hong Kong, and 7 other live markets. A currency conversion alone tells you nothing about what a Dubai or a US offer is actually worth after that country's own tax system runs the number.
This article runs Singapore's own senior AI/ML Engineer benchmark, and the equivalent benchmark from each of 10 other live markets, through each market's own live take-home tax engine, the same engine that powers this site's standalone take-home calculators. No flat percentage estimates.

How the ranking is actually calculated
1. The benchmark. Each market's gross AI/ML Engineer salary is PayMetric Labs' own benchmark for that role, kept consistent with that market's AI Engineer Salary guide on this site, so the figures line up everywhere this site cites them.
2. The tax engine. That gross figure is run through the same tax engine behind that market's own standalone take-home calculator: real IRAS bands for Singapore (Employment Pass, no CPF), real Income Tax and NI bands for the UK, real GOSI for Saudi Arabia, zero-tax rules where they genuinely apply. Nothing is a flat cross-market percentage.
3. The ranking axis. Local-currency net pay converts to USD at an indicative FX snapshot purely so 11 currencies can share one ranked list. Local currency is always the real number, USD is the comparison tool.
Employment Pass vs citizen/PR: the CPF gap that changes your real number
The single biggest variable in Singapore's own tax outcome isn't IRAS's progressive bands, it's residency status. Employment Pass holders (the standard route for AI talent relocating into Singapore) make zero CPF contribution, while citizens and PRs contribute up to 20% of Ordinary Wages (up to the S$8,000/month ceiling from January 2026) into CPF. That's why the 89.5% retention figure used in this comparison assumes Employment Pass status specifically, not the lower retention rate a citizen or PR would see on the identical gross salary.
Compared to the Gulf zero-tax markets, Singapore doesn't retain 100% of gross, but its gross AI-engineer benchmark is also considerably higher than Saudi Arabia's or Qatar's, which is why Singapore still nets more in absolute terms than either of those two markets at the senior level.

What about mid-level Singapore AI engineers?
On the mid-level benchmark (S$123,000 gross), a Singapore-based AI/ML Engineer on an Employment Pass nets S$114,600 a year, ranking 4 of 11 markets on this comparison, ahead of 7 others. Run your own exact salary, at either level, through the Singapore take-home calculator and compare it against the AI Talent Location Planner.
Frequently asked questions
How does Singapore's AI engineer salary compare to other global markets in 2026?
Run through each market's own tax system, a senior AI/ML Engineer's net pay ranks Singapore 4th out of the 11 markets in this comparison, ahead of the UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. The UAE tops the list at AED 750,000 a year (zero personal income tax), followed by the US and Hong Kong. Singapore's own senior AI/ML Engineer benchmark nets S$177,210 for a foreign Employment Pass holder after IRAS tax.
Why does Singapore rank so highly despite not being a zero-tax market?
Singapore's progressive resident tax rates top out lower than most Western markets, and Employment Pass holders make no CPF contribution at all (CPF applies only to citizens and permanent residents), so a foreign AI engineer on an Employment Pass retains 89.5% of gross salary. That combination of a competitive gross benchmark and a genuinely low effective tax rate for foreign talent is why Singapore ranks ahead of higher-nominal-tax Western markets like the UK, Australia, and Ireland even without being a zero-tax jurisdiction.
Does the Singapore figure in this comparison assume Employment Pass or citizen/PR status?
Employment Pass (foreigner) status, which is the relevant scenario for most AI talent relocating into Singapore rather than already holding citizenship or PR. This matters materially: citizens and PRs make CPF contributions on top of IRAS income tax, which lowers net take-home relative to the Employment Pass figure shown here. Use the Singapore take-home calculator with the citizen/PR toggle if that's your actual status.
Is a higher net-pay ranking abroad actually worth relocating from Singapore for?
Not automatically. The UAE and Hong Kong, both ranked above Singapore in this comparison, carry meaningfully different cost-of-living and lifestyle trade-offs, and Hong Kong itself ranks as the world's single most expensive city in Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living survey. Visa sponsorship, career-path fit at the destination employer, and family considerations matter as much as the raw net-pay comparison.
What would it take for a Singapore-based AI engineer to move to the top-ranked market?
The UAE uses an employer-sponsored work permit tied to a specific job offer and salary threshold; there's no direct Singapore-to-UAE fast track. The US requires an employer-sponsored visa (commonly H-1B, capped and lottery-based) or an O-1 for exceptional ability, a materially harder and slower process than securing a Singapore Employment Pass. None of these routes are quick, and visa timelines should weigh as heavily as the net-pay comparison in any relocation decision.
How does Singapore's benchmark compare specifically to Hong Kong, the other major APAC hub?
Hong Kong ranks just above Singapore in this comparison (net pay of HK$1,123,310 vs Singapore's S$177,210), driven mainly by a higher gross AI-engineer benchmark in Hong Kong rather than a materially different tax structure; both cities apply broadly similar low, capped effective tax rates. Hong Kong's housing costs are also higher than Singapore's, which the net-pay ranking above doesn't capture.
Does this comparison include contractor or freelance AI work?
No, this comparison is permanent-employee benchmark salaries only, run through each market's employee tax system. Contractor structures and day-rate work vary enormously market to market and are out of scope for a like-for-like comparison. If you're weighing contracting specifically, use the relevant contractor-focused calculator for your target market instead.
