Product Ownership does not have a formal senior individual contributor ladder above Senior Product Owner. The natural progression is either up into Product Manager roles or across into Business Analysis or Delivery Management. Most Product Owners make the move after 5 to 8 years of experience. The transition requires demonstrating customer research skills, commercial judgment, and the ability to make and defend prioritisation decisions without referencing a delivery deadline as the primary constraint. POs who have been embedded in discovery work alongside PMs move fastest.
It is a useful baseline credential, particularly for those entering the discipline without a formal product background. It will not differentiate you significantly in a competitive market. Employers at larger Irish tech companies look more closely at your portfolio of product decisions and your track record of stakeholder management than at certifications.
Yes, and it is one of the cleanest transitions in the market. BAs already understand requirements gathering, process analysis, and stakeholder communication. The investment required is in agile ceremonies and backlog management tools. Most BAs who make the move describe the transition as a change of context rather than a change of fundamental skill.
