Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect vs IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer: Salary & Career Benchmarks in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer roles typically command a higher median salary than Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect positions. According to our 2026 live benchmark data, a mid-level IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer earns a median salary of €78K, whereas a Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect brings in roughly €73K (a gap of €5K at the median).

Seniority, tech stack, and location all move this gap. Senior practitioners in either discipline can exceed the upper range through specialist skills. See the skills premium section below for the specific certifications and tools that push offers to the top of the range.

While both positions are vital to a modern tech organisation, Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect and IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer have fundamentally different daily workflows.

Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect focuses primarily on planning and overseeing the physical infrastructure of data centre facilities, spanning power, cooling, capacity planning, and vendor management. Day-to-day work revolves around planning capacity and power/cooling requirements for new facility build-outs, managing vendor and colocation relationships, overseeing facility uptime and maintenance schedules, and coordinating with IT teams on equipment rollouts.

IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer focuses on same discipline as IoT and embedded systems engineering elsewhere, spanning firmware development for connected devices. Their time is spent writing and debugging firmware in C or C++, integrating sensors and communication modules, testing devices under real-world conditions, and optimising for power consumption and reliability.

Transitioning between these two paths is achievable but requires targeted upskilling.

Neither path requires starting from scratch. Professionals in both roles share underlying technology fluency; the gap is usually domain knowledge and specific tooling rather than core engineering fundamentals.

In the Netherlands in 2026, both roles are seeing demand, but with different drivers.

Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect demand is moderate, particularly in the Netherlands' role as a dense, land-constrained but major European data centre hub centred on Amsterdam, alongside growing capacity near Eindhoven. IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer demand is moderate, concentrated in Netherlands' semiconductor and industrial-electronics base driving steady demand for embedded engineers, led by employers such as NXP Semiconductors and Philips.

Workspace flexibility significantly impacts total compensation value in the Netherlands.

Data Center Facilities Manager / Architect roles score 10% on our remote-friendliness index (Low). This is because almost none of this role can be done remotely given the physical nature of facility management. Where in-office attendance is required, it is typically driven by facility management requires constant on-site presence at the data centre itself.

IoT & Embedded Systems Engineer roles score 20% (Low). Little of this role can be done remotely given the need for hands-on hardware access, though schematic design and firmware simulation work can be done off-site between lab sessions is the primary driver of flexibility. When office days are required, it is usually for firmware development and hardware testing require on-site lab access, particularly at NXP Semiconductors's Eindhoven facilities.
