Candidates evaluating offers should compare true net income rather than gross salary alone.

As a sole proprietor with an 18% loading over 230 billable days, a HK$72K permanent Blockchain / DeFi Protocol Engineer base salary converts to roughly HK$4435/day. A PAYG/agency contractor typically needs a lower loading (8%-15%), since Hong Kong has no compulsory employer-side cost beyond MPF for the agency to cover. Use the Hong Kong day rate calculator on the contract-rates page to adjust structure and billable days.

Multiply the permanent base salary by a contractor loading factor (typically 8%–15% PAYG/agency or 15%–25% sole proprietor), then divide by realistic billable days for the year (commonly 230). That loading covers unpaid leave, statutory holidays, and self-funded MPF contributions permanent employees share with an employer. Always confirm whether a quoted rate assumes PAYG/agency or sole proprietor status before comparing offers.
