Most quants move from model development into model validation or desk-facing quant roles with more direct trading exposure, then into senior or lead quant positions overseeing a model suite. A subset moves into portfolio management proper once they build enough conviction and track record around specific strategies.
It's common but not universal. UBS and the larger banks often prefer a PhD in a quantitative field for research-heavy roles, while Geneva's private banks and smaller hedge funds are sometimes more flexible if a candidate has strong applied experience and a Master's degree.
