Most engineers progress from building individual pipelines to owning a research team's entire data platform, then into senior or principal data engineering roles that set standards across multiple therapeutic areas. Some move into computational biology proper if they build deeper domain science expertise alongside the engineering.
A pure software engineering background with strong Python and pipeline skills is enough for many roles at Roche and Novartis, though candidates with a biology, genomics, or computational biology degree are preferred for roles closer to the science and tend to progress faster into senior positions.
