The outlook is strong. The dbt ecosystem is still expanding, and the role is well-established enough to be a mainstream hire rather than an experimental one. Companies that have adopted modern data stacks are not going back, which means the market for Analytics Engineers is structurally durable.
Yes, and it is one of the cleaner transitions. Analytics Engineers already work with statistical concepts, understand the data model deeply, and have business context. The investment required is in ML frameworks and experimental design. Most people who make the move describe it as adding a new layer to existing skills rather than starting over.
