This is an estimate for an Australian resident using 2026-27 tax rates and a 12% Super Guarantee. It assumes the full salary is subject to SG, so it does not model the quarterly maximum contribution base, awards or enterprise agreements, bonuses, overtime, salary sacrifice, other offsets, family MLS rules, or individual HELP repayment income adjustments. Check the written offer and ask the employer whether super is included in, or paid on top of, the quoted figure.

Salary package including super versus salary plus super

A salary package can sound larger than the cash salary you will earn. When super is included, the employer takes the quoted package and allocates part to its Super Guarantee obligation. When a contract says salary plus super, the quoted salary is cash pay and the employer adds its super contribution on top. The distinction affects your monthly budget, your income-tax calculation, and how fairly you compare two offers.

The Australian Taxation Office says the minimum Super Guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings from 1 July 2025. The rate is a minimum, not a promise that every dollar of a compensation package is treated the same way. Ask how the employer handles bonuses, commissions, overtime, salary sacrifice, and any award or enterprise-agreement entitlements.

Australia salary package calculator FAQs

1

What does a $120,000 package including super mean in Australia?

Assuming a 12% Super Guarantee and that the full amount is ordinary-time earnings, $120,000 including super means roughly $107,143 cash salary and $12,857 employer super. It is not the same as $120,000 salary plus super, which would cost the employer about $134,400 and give you a materially higher cash salary. Check the contract wording because an award, agreement, bonus structure, or super contribution base can change the calculation.

2

Is superannuation included in an Australian salary package?

It can be, but it is not automatic. An employer may quote a total remuneration package that includes Super Guarantee contributions, or it may quote a base salary with super paid on top. Ask for the base salary, Super Guarantee amount, bonus, and total remuneration in writing before comparing offers.

3

What is the Super Guarantee rate for 2026-27?

The legislated minimum Super Guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025 and remains 12% for 2026-27. It is paid by an employer to an eligible employee's super fund and is generally calculated on ordinary time earnings. An award or agreement can require a higher amount.

4

Why does the package calculation look wrong for a high salary?

This calculator uses a simple 12% calculation across the entered cash salary. In practice, the quarterly maximum contribution base can limit compulsory Super Guarantee at higher incomes, and some payments such as overtime or particular bonuses may not count as ordinary time earnings. Use the written contract and current ATO guidance for the definitive position.

5

Does a salary package including super reduce my tax?

No. The cash salary inside an inclusive package is still taxable income. The key difference is that less of the quoted package arrives as taxable cash salary because part is employer super. Voluntary salary sacrifice is a separate arrangement with its own contributions-tax and concessional-cap rules.

6

Does this calculator include HECS/HELP and the Medicare Levy Surcharge?

You can add an indicative HECS/HELP repayment and a single-person Medicare Levy Surcharge estimate without private hospital cover. Those are simplified checks. HELP repayment income and MLS income can include items beyond cash salary, and MLS family rules and qualifying hospital cover are not fully modeled here.
