Basic Salary vs Total Package Calculator

A UAE offer is usually one headline number that bundles basic salary, housing allowance, and transport allowance. Your take-home doesn't care about the split, since all of it is tax-free, but your gratuity does. See exactly how much.

Gratuity: full package vs basic-only

YearsIf calculated on basic only (correct)If wrongly assumed on full package

2yrAED 24,164AED 34,521
5yrAED 60,411AED 86,301
10yrAED 146,712AED 209,589
15yrAED 233,014AED 332,877
20yrAED 319,315AED 456,164

The gap between these two columns is real money: a lower basic-salary split keeps your monthly take-home identical (everything is tax-free) but shrinks your actual gratuity entitlement, since gratuity is calculated on basic salary only.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does the basic/housing/transport split change my take-home pay?

No. Every part of a UAE package is tax-free, so your monthly take-home equals the full package regardless of how it's split between basic salary, housing allowance, and transport allowance. The split only matters for one thing: gratuity.

2

Why does the split matter if my take-home is the same either way?

Because gratuity, the lump sum your employer owes you when you leave, is calculated on basic salary only, not your full package. Two employees on an identical AED 30,000/month package can end up with very different gratuity payouts if one has a 60% basic split and the other has an 85% basic split.

3

What's a typical basic salary percentage in a UAE offer?

Most UAE packages set basic salary at 60-80% of the total quoted figure, with the remainder split between housing allowance (commonly 20-30%) and a smaller transport allowance. There's no legal minimum basic-salary percentage, so this varies by employer and should always be confirmed on your offer letter.

4

Can I negotiate my basic salary percentage?

Yes, and it's worth doing if you plan to stay several years, since a higher basic-salary percentage directly increases your gratuity accrual at the same total package cost to your employer. It's a low-friction ask because it usually doesn't change what the employer pays you monthly or the company's total cost.

5

Is basic salary the same as gross salary?

No. Gross salary in a UAE context usually means the total package (basic plus allowances), while basic salary is only the base component of that package used specifically for gratuity and some visa-classification calculations. Always ask HR to state your basic salary explicitly, since offer letters don't always spell it out.

6

Does the split affect anything besides gratuity?

Basic salary can also factor into certain visa classification thresholds and some employers' bonus or loan calculations, but for the vast majority of UAE employees, gratuity is the one figure where the basic/allowance split has a real financial consequence.
