UAE vs UK / IrelandTax take-home only

UAE vs UK/Ireland Purchasing Power Calculator

A tax-free AED 25,000/month UAE package converts to roughly £5,075/month gross in the UK. As a UK salary, tax and NI would take £15,021/yr (24.7%) off that. In the UAE, you keep every dirham. This is a straight tax comparison, not a full cost-of-living one, we're upfront about that limit.

Cost of living context, not a precise adjustment: per a Numbeo snapshot dated 17 Jun 2026, overall cost of living including rent in London runs roughly 33.9% higher than in Dubai. That figure is crowd-sourced, moves over time, and varies hugely by neighbourhood and lifestyle, use it as a directional signal, not a substitute for pricing your own actual budget in both cities.

How this comparison actually works, and where it stops

Because the UAE has no personal income tax, your quoted package is your take-home in full, there's no PAYE-equivalent deduction to model. This calculator's only real job is the currency conversion and the UK/Ireland tax calculation on the other side: it takes your monthly AED package, converts it to GBP or EUR at the exchange rate you set, and runs that converted gross figure through the exact same UK (Income Tax + National Insurance) or Ireland (Income Tax + USC + PRSI) tax engines used across the rest of this site.

The result is a genuinely apples-to-apples number: what you'd keep if that exact gross salary, expressed in pounds or euros, were taxed as a UK or Irish employee. The gap between that figure and your full tax-free UAE amount is exactly what 0% income tax is worth to you on that specific package, no more, no less.

What it deliberately does not do is answer "where does my money go further". That requires a real cost-of-living comparison: rent (which runs materially higher in London and, to a lesser extent, Dublin, than in most UAE housing markets), healthcare, schooling if you have children, and your actual spending habits. We show a single dated Numbeo cost-of-living snapshot as a directional signal, not because it's precise, but because pretending cost of living doesn't exist would be its own kind of dishonesty. Treat it as a prompt to build your own real budget, not as the final answer.

Frequently asked questions

1

How does this calculator compare a UAE salary to a UK or Ireland salary?

It converts your tax-free UAE monthly package to GBP or EUR at an editable exchange rate, then runs that converted gross figure through the same UK or Ireland tax engines used across this site, to see what you'd actually keep if that exact gross number were a UK or Irish salary instead. The gap between the two is precisely what the UAE's 0% personal income tax saves you on that amount, nothing more, nothing less.

2

Is this a full cost-of-living comparison?

No, and we don't pretend otherwise. This is a tax take-home comparison only. Rent, healthcare, schooling, transport, and daily costs differ substantially between UAE cities and London or Dublin, and a fair cost-of-living comparison needs your own real budget, not a single average multiplier. We show a dated, static Numbeo cost-of-living snapshot as directional context, clearly labelled with its source date, but it should not be treated as precise or current.

3

Why is the exchange rate editable instead of fixed?

Exchange rates move daily, and a hard-coded rate would silently go stale. We default to a sensible mid-2026 market rate for AED to GBP and AED to EUR, but you should update it to today's actual rate (or your specific transfer provider's rate, which usually differs from the interbank mid-rate) before treating the comparison as more than a rough guide.

4

Does the UAE side of this calculator account for gratuity?

No, deliberately not. This tool isolates the pure monthly take-home comparison. Gratuity is a lump sum paid on exit, not part of your ongoing monthly cash flow, and including it here would conflate two different kinds of money. Use our UAE End-of-Service Gratuity Calculator separately to see what you'd accrue over time.

5

What about pension contributions in the UK or Ireland?

This calculator shows post-tax cash take-home only, it doesn't model UK auto-enrolment pension contributions or Ireland's PRSA/auto-enrolment options, both of which would reduce net cash pay further but build retirement wealth the UAE's gratuity system doesn't replicate in the same way. If pension contributions matter to your comparison, deduct your expected contribution rate from the home-country net figure shown here.

6

Should I use average or median salary figures, or my actual offer?

Always use your actual offer, or the specific number you're negotiating. Country-level averages hide enormous variation by role, seniority, and city (Dubai and Abu Dhabi differ from other Emirates; London differs sharply from the rest of the UK). A comparison built on your real number is far more useful than one built on a generic benchmark.

7

Why do you only cover the UK and Ireland right now?

Those are the two markets with fully verified tax engines already live on this site (lib/uk-tax.ts and lib/ireland-tax.ts), so the comparison here is built on the same rates we use everywhere else, not a simplified approximation. We may extend this to other home countries as we verify their tax engines to the same standard.
