Sweden gives parents 480 days of paid leave per child, split into two tiers. The first 390 days pay at sjukpenningnivå, roughly 80% of your SGI (sjukpenninggrundande inkomst), Försäkringskassan's own income-basis figure. The exact formula is SGI × 0.97 (a calendar-day adjustment factor) × 80% ÷ 365, which produces the well-known 2026 maximum of 1,259 kr/day. The remaining 90 days pay lägstanivå, a flat 180 kr/day regardless of income, and only unlock once you've used at least 180 sjukpenningnivå days.
The detail that catches higher earners off guard: SGI itself is capped at 10 × prisbasbelopp, 592 000 kr for 2026. Earn more than that and your statutory benefit doesn't grow with your salary, so your real income replacement percentage drops the further above the ceiling you sit. That gap is exactly what employer föräldralön exists to close: many collective agreements top up parental pay with an extra 10% of salary below the SGI ceiling and 90% above it, often bringing total replacement close to 90%, but this isn't a legal requirement, it depends entirely on your employer's kollektivavtal.
Parental benefit is ordinary taxable income, withheld by Försäkringskassan the same way an employer withholds from a paycheck. This calculator reuses the same national-average kommunalskatt and statlig inkomstskatt model as our other Sweden calculators for that tax step, and shows the cash-flow comparison against your normal salary so you can see the real gap, not just the headline "80%" figure.
