UoP vs B2B: Which Pays More by Seniority Level in Poland's IT Market

By PayMetric Labs Research Desk

At a junior gross figure of PLN 8,500/month, umowa o pracę actually nets more than B2B (PLN 6,124 vs PLN 5,493). By mid-level, PLN 15,250/month, B2B edges ahead by about 5%. At senior level, PLN 23,250/month, B2B's lead widens to roughly 25%, in line with market reporting of a 13-26% B2B premium. Here's exactly why the gap grows with seniority, and the real numbers at each level.

Typical B2B net-income premium

Here's the answer before the mechanics. At a junior-level PLN 8,500/month gross figure, umowa o pracę nets PLN 6,124/month, actually ahead of B2B's PLN 5,493. At mid-level PLN 15,250/month, B2B edges ahead with PLN 10,663/month versus UoP's PLN 10,144, about 5% more. At senior-level PLN 23,250/month, B2B's lead widens sharply to PLN 17,703/month against UoP's PLN 14,216, roughly 24.5% more, squarely inside the 13% to 26% premium range reported across Poland's IT market.

This isn't a coincidence, it's the direct mechanical result of how B2B's fixed ZUS cost and flat ryczałt rate interact with umowa o pracę's progressive PIT bands as income climbs. Here's exactly why the gap moves the way it does.

Why the gap widens as seniority rises

B2B's "duży ZUS" contribution is a fixed monthly złoty amount, not a percentage of revenue. At a junior income level, that fixed cost represents a large share of total revenue, roughly 22.7% of gross at PLN 8,500/month. At a senior income level, the exact same fixed złoty amount represents a much smaller share, under 8.3% of gross at PLN 23,250/month. The fixed cost simply matters less the more you earn.

Meanwhile, umowa o pracę's 12%/32% PIT bands work in the opposite direction. A junior earner's taxable income typically never crosses the PLN 120,000/year threshold into the 32% bracket, so their whole income sits in the 12% band. A senior earner well above that threshold pays 32% on a meaningful chunk of their income, while B2B's ryczałt mode stays flat at 12% on revenue no matter how much they invoice. Both effects point the same direction: B2B's relative advantage over UoP grows as gross income rises.

Net income by seniority level, side by side

Gross figures are representative of typical Polish IT seniority bands per current market salary reporting. UoP uses standard PLN 250/month KUP and mandatory sickness ZUS; B2B uses whichever of skala, liniowy, or ryczałt nets the most at that revenue (labeled per row), standard "duży ZUS" rate, voluntary sickness included.

Market reporting on Poland's IT sector puts the typical B2B net-income premium at 13% to 26% over an equivalent umowa o pracę salary; our senior-level worked figure of +24.5% sits within that range. The junior-level result (-10.3%) is our own calculation, not sourced from market reporting, and reflects the same underlying mechanics applied to a lower gross figure.

The junior-level result contradicts the usual B2B narrative

Most discussion of B2B in Poland's IT market focuses on the mid-to-senior premium and treats "B2B pays more" as a blanket rule. Our junior-level figure shows that isn't true at the bottom of the income range: at PLN 8,500/month, umowa o pracę nets more, before you even account for B2B's missing paid leave, sick pay, and severance protections. A junior developer being offered the same headline number on B2B instead of umowa o pracę is being offered a strictly worse deal on both counts, net income and job security, and should negotiate the B2B rate meaningfully higher to compensate.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does B2B always pay more than umowa o pracę in Poland?

No, and this is the single most common misconception about Polish IT pay. At junior-level gross figures around PLN 8,500 a month, umowa o pracę actually nets more than B2B, PLN 6,124 versus PLN 5,493 a month, because B2B's ZUS is a fixed monthly cost that eats a proportionally larger share of lower income. B2B's advantage only shows up once you're earning enough that the fixed ZUS cost becomes small relative to your revenue, roughly PLN 13,500 to 14,000 a month and up.

2

Why does the B2B premium grow with seniority specifically?

Two mechanics compound as gross income rises. First, B2B's ZUS is a fixed złoty amount rather than a percentage, so it shrinks as a share of income the more you earn. Second, umowa o pracę's PIT climbs into the 32% band above PLN 120,000 of annual taxable income, a threshold junior and even many mid-level earners never cross, while B2B's ryczałt mode stays flat at 12% on revenue regardless of how much you invoice. Senior-level earners cross the UoP 32% threshold while their B2B ryczałt rate stays flat, which is exactly why the gap widens from roughly -10% at junior level to +25% at senior level in the worked figures above.

3

Is the 13% to 26% B2B premium figure from market reporting accurate?

Broadly, yes, for mid-to-senior income levels. Industry reporting on Poland's IT market puts the typical B2B net-income premium at 13% to 26% over an equivalent umowa o pracę salary. Our own worked calculation lands at roughly 24.5% at a senior-level PLN 23,250/month gross figure, squarely inside that range. Where market commentary tends to undersell the picture is at junior level, where the premium doesn't just shrink, it inverts, and umowa o pracę nets more.

4

Should a junior developer take a lower B2B rate over an umowa o pracę offer?

Generally, no, unless the B2B rate is meaningfully higher than the equivalent gross UoP offer, specifically to compensate for both the net-income shortfall at junior income levels and the complete loss of paid leave, sick pay, and severance protections. A junior developer choosing between a PLN 8,500/month UoP offer and an B2B contract at the same headline PLN 8,500 figure is choosing a worse net-income deal on top of losing employment protections, based on the numbers above.

5

At what income level does B2B become clearly worth it?

Based on the crossover mechanics, B2B starts nosing ahead around PLN 13,500 to 14,000 a month invoiced revenue, and the advantage becomes substantial (20%+) somewhere in the PLN 20,000 to 23,000 a month range, roughly senior-developer territory in Poland's IT market. Below that crossover, B2B's fixed ZUS cost and the loss of employment protections make umowa o pracę the more defensible choice for most people, all else being equal.

6

Does this comparison include the employer's side of the cost?

The net-income comparison above is purely what the worker takes home, since that's usually the decision that matters to an individual. But it's worth knowing that umowa o pracę also costs the employer roughly 20.48% more than gross salary in employer-side ZUS, a cost B2B clients don't pay at all since a contractor's ZUS is their own responsibility. That's part of why employers often prefer offering B2B arrangements even when a candidate would net more on the UoP side.
