What is a realistic Cloud Architect (AWS / Azure / GCP) counter-offer in New Zealand?

For this Cloud Architect (AWS / Azure / GCP) benchmark, NZ$126K marks the lower quarter of the market, NZ$137K is the median, and NZ$148K reaches the upper quarter. If your experience matches the advertised level, use the median as a practical discussion point rather than treating the top of the range as an automatic target. Compare base salary first, then weigh bonus, pension, equity, location, and the estimated take-home result before you counter.

How the verdict is calculated

1. Real benchmark data

Your role and country are matched against PayMetric Labs' own salary market intelligence: the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile base salary for that role. This is the same data behind our salary benchmark pages, rated by confidence level.

2. A plain three-band verdict

Below the 25th percentile is Below Market. Between the 25th and 75th percentile is In Market. At or above the 75th percentile is Above Market. No fabricated score, just where your number sits in the real distribution.

3. Real take-home pay

Base plus bonus is run through PayMetric Labs' own tax calculation engine for your country, giving an estimated net annual figure, not just a gross-to-market comparison.

4. Your negotiation gap

If you're below the median or below the 75th percentile, the tool shows exactly how much more base salary would move you into the next band, a concrete number to anchor a counter-offer conversation.

What a benchmark comparison cannot tell you

Company-specific factors

Stage, funding, and industry all shift what's realistic. A Below Market verdict at a well-funded scale-up may still be a strong offer relative to that specific company's typical range.

Equity and long-term upside

Equity is shown separately because it can't be fairly benchmarked. For an early-stage company it can be worth far more, or far less, than any base salary gap.

Total benefits package

Health cover, extra leave, learning budgets, and other perks have real value that a base-salary comparison alone won't capture.

Career trajectory

A role that pays slightly below market but accelerates your skills or seniority can be worth more over a multi-year horizon than a higher number today.

Frequently asked questions

1

How does the Offer Checker decide if an offer is good?

The Offer Checker compares your offered base salary against the real distribution of salaries PayMetric Labs tracks for the same role in the same country: the 25th percentile (p25), median, and 75th percentile (p75). If your base sits below the 25th percentile, the offer is marked Below Market. Between p25 and p75, it is In Market, with a note on where you sit relative to the median. At or above the 75th percentile, it is Above Market. This is a straightforward statistical read, not an opaque score.

2

How is the market salary benchmark calculated for my role?

Benchmarks come from PayMetric Labs' own salary market intelligence for each role and country, built from aggregated, real compensation data. Each benchmark carries a confidence level (High, Moderate, or Limited) based on how well corroborated the underlying coverage is. When a market has limited data, the Offer Checker flags this clearly so you can weigh the verdict as directional rather than precise.

3

Is bonus included in the take-home pay calculation?

Yes. Any annual cash bonus you enter is added to your base salary before the take-home calculation, so the estimated net figure reflects base plus bonus after tax. The market comparison itself, however, is based on base salary alone, since that is what's directly comparable across the benchmark data.

4

What is considered a good job offer?

There is no single number that makes an offer good, since it depends on the role, seniority, location, and what else is on the table (bonus, pension, equity, benefits). As a starting point, an offer at or above the median for your role and country is a reasonable outcome, and an offer at or above the 75th percentile is strong. An offer below the 25th percentile is worth questioning, especially if your experience and skills match or exceed the typical profile for the role.

5

Does the Offer Checker account for equity or stock options?

Equity is not included in the market comparison, because no reliable market data exists for equity grants: valuations, vesting schedules, and liquidity vary too much between companies to benchmark fairly. If you enter an annualized equity estimate, it is shown as additional package value on top of your verdict, clearly labeled as your own estimate, not verdicted against the market.

6

How accurate is the take-home pay estimate?

The take-home figure uses PayMetric Labs' own tax calculation engines for each supported country, applying the simplest tax situation by default (single filing status, no local surcharges, and for the US, federal tax only). Your actual take-home may differ based on your specific filing status, state or regional taxes, and other personal circumstances. Use it as a strong estimate, not a payslip.

7

Which countries and roles does the Offer Checker support?

The Offer Checker covers 26 markets: the UK, Ireland, the US, Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Portugal, Estonia, Sweden, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Mexico, Brazil, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Within each country, only roles with real benchmark data appear in the role dropdown, so you will never see a verdict built on a role with no underlying data.

8

Can I share my offer analysis?

Yes. Once you check an offer, the page URL updates to reflect your inputs, and a Share My Analysis button copies a short summary plus the link to your clipboard, ready to paste into a message, forum post, or negotiation notes.
