The technical track above Principal is Distinguished Engineer or Fellow. These roles exist at Google, Meta, Stripe, and a handful of other organisations with Dublin offices. At this level, the expectation is organisation-shaping impact: publishing significant research, designing foundational systems, or setting technical direction for an entire product portfolio. The number of open positions is very small and most Distinguished Engineers are known in the industry before being hired into the role.
Principal Software Engineers who move into management typically step into Director of Engineering or VP Engineering roles directly, skipping the first-time Engineering Manager level. The transition is less common but happens regularly when a Principal Engineer has been informally setting direction for multiple teams and takes on formal organisational responsibility. The move requires developing strong people leadership skills that complement the existing technical authority.

Demand is high and growing. Principal Software Engineer hiring in New Zealand is steady, anchored by Xero, Trade Me, and the growing Auckland SaaS scene (Vista Group, Pushpay, EROAD, Halter). Demand is concentrated in Auckland and Wellington, and New Zealand employers are increasingly having to compete with Australian salary bands to keep candidates from taking their OE across the Tasman.
New Zealand taxes income on a progressive PAYE scale administered by Inland Revenue (IRD): 10.5% up to NZ$15,600, 17.5% up to NZ$53,500, 30% up to NZ$78,100, 33% up to NZ$180,000, and 39% above that, plus a 1.75% ACC Earner's Levy on top. The step requires demonstrating impact at organisation level: an RFC that was adopted broadly, a system redesign that improved reliability across multiple products, or technical mentorship that measurably improved the team's engineering standards. Impact at scope, not just quality of code, is the deciding factor.
The work is roughly 40% coding in the highest-risk areas of the codebase, 40% writing and reviewing technical designs and RFCs, and 20% mentoring and cross-team alignment. The coding component is smaller than at Senior level but it remains essential for credibility. Principal Engineers who stop coding altogether tend to lose the technical authority that makes the role effective.
At a small number of organisations, yes. Distinguished Engineer and Fellow roles exist at Google, Meta, and Stripe in Dublin. Most Principal Engineers remain at that level for the rest of their careers and that is a deliberate, well-compensated, and respected choice. The alternative paths are into Engineering Management or Solutions Architecture.
Principal Engineers typically earn €148 to €185k in Ireland compared to €118 to €145k for Staff Engineers. The gap of approximately €30 to €40k reflects the significantly broader scope and organisation-wide impact expected at the Principal level.
